Through a Boyโ€™s Eyes (2018) is an anthology film that brings together five LGBTQ+ short films from France and Spain. Each story delves into the complexities of self-discovery, gender identity, and sexuality through the lens of boyhood and adolescence. The collection presents an intimate, raw, and thought-provoking look at the struggles and triumphs of young men navigating their identities in environments that may not always be accepting.

This anthology is a compelling reflection on the pivotal moments in a young personโ€™s life when they begin to understand their emotions, attractions, and place in the world. Through different perspectives, it captures the fears, desires, and social challenges that shape LGBTQ+ experiences.

Films Featured in the Anthology:

1. On the Roof (En la azotea) (2015)

Set on a rooftop in Barcelona, On the Roof follows a group of teenage boys who gather in secret to watch a woman undress through her apartment window. Their conversations are filled with bravado and peer pressure, but one of them, Adriรกn, seems distant and uninterested. As the boys joke and boast about their experiences with girls, Adriรกnโ€™s discomfort grows, revealing his internal conflict.

The film masterfully explores themes of masculinity, peer influence, and sexual awakening. Adriรกnโ€™s silent struggle represents the often-isolating experience of realizing oneโ€™s sexual identity in an environment dominated by heteronormative expectations. Through subtle glances and body language, On the Roof highlights the pressure young men face to conform while suppressing their true feelings.

2. Son (El hijo) (2012)

Pedro, a 17-year-old boy, is part of a homophobic gang that terrorizes LGBTQ+ individuals. He is the son of a concerned father who senses something is troubling him. Unbeknownst to his gang members and family, Pedro is secretly in a relationship with another boy. As his two worlds collide, he is forced to confront his internalized fears and the potential consequences of living a double life.

This short film powerfully addresses themes of self-hatred, repression, and the dangers of toxic masculinity. Pedroโ€™s struggle is a reflection of many LGBTQ+ youths who feel pressured to hide their true selves due to societal or familial expectations. The tension between his violent external world and his private affections creates a gripping and emotional narrative.

3. Inside (Dentro) (2013)

Inside is an introspective film that delves into the psychological conflict of a young man struggling with his sexual identity. The protagonist lives in an oppressive, conservative environment where any deviation from the norm is met with hostility. As he attempts to suppress his desires, the film uses haunting and surreal imagery to depict his inner turmoil.

The visual storytelling in Inside is particularly striking, with metaphorical sequences that represent the suffocation and fear that many closeted individuals experience. Through minimal dialogue and strong cinematography, the film immerses the audience in the protagonistโ€™s claustrophobic reality, making his journey feel deeply personal and universal at the same time.

4. Tomboy (Mรชme pas mort) (2007)

Unlike the other films, Tomboy shifts focus to gender identity. It tells the story of a young girl who prefers to dress and act like a boy. She enjoys roughhousing, playing soccer, and challenging gender norms, much to the dismay of her parents and teachers. As societal pressures mount, she is forced to question whether she can continue being herself or conform to expectations.

This short film is an early exploration of gender nonconformity, tackling issues that many gender-diverse children face. The protagonistโ€™s innocence and confidence contrast with the rigid world around her, making her struggle all the more poignant. Through her experiences, Tomboy encourages viewers to question the limitations society places on gender expression and identity.

5. Paradigma (2016)

Paradigma follows a young man on a journey of self-discovery and romantic exploration. Unlike some of the darker entries in the anthology, this film takes a more hopeful approach, showcasing the beauty of love and acceptance. The protagonist navigates his emotions, relationships, and social surroundings, gradually gaining the confidence to embrace who he truly is.

While still addressing the struggles of growing up LGBTQ+, Paradigma is a refreshing take on self-acceptance, reminding viewers that joy and love can be found even in challenging circumstances. The filmโ€™s storytelling is intimate and poetic, offering a heartfelt conclusion to the anthology.
