The Kid Who Would Be King (2019) is a fantasy adventure film written and directed by Joe Cornish (Attack the Block). According to Merlin, the evil sorceress Morgana (Rebecca Ferguson) is awakening from her underground prison and will soon unleash her dark forces to enslave humanity.

Realizing that he cannot face this challenge alone, Alex recruits his friend Bedders as well as his bullies, Lance and Kaye, turning them into modern versions of King Arthur’s legendary Knights of the Round Table. Together, they undergo magical training with Merlin, learning swordplay, strategy, and teamwork.

Despite their differences, the four begin to bond as they prepare for their final confrontation. They also learn valuable lessons about leadership, honor, and the importance of standing together in the face of adversity.

As Morgana finally emerges, now in her dragon-like form, Alex and his friends must rally an army of fellow students to defend their school in an epic final battle. Despite positive reviews from critics, The Kid Who Would Be King underperformed at the box office, grossing only about $32 million worldwide against a $59 million budget. However, it has since gained a following on streaming platforms and home media, where it has been appreciated as an underrated family adventure film.
